Replacing a fuse in an electrical device is fairly simple, but you must make sure you use the recommended fuse size for the device. By using the recommended fuse size, there will be a decreased risk of a fire hazard.

The image provided is a common electrical fuse used in electrical equipment. Fuses are available in numerous sizes. Again, to help eliminate a fire hazard make sure you use the recommended fuse size.

Milestone Electric would like to share ‘Home Safety Tip No. 132.’

If you are ever finding yourself needing to replace a fuse in an electrical device, make sure you locate the recommended fuse size to ensure that you are replacing with the proper fuse. Using a different fuse size may not seem like a big deal, but really, it is like putting diesel in a gasoline engine. It just won’t work. Running electricity through a fuse that is not big enough can cause circuits to overheat and create a fire hazard.

ThisOldHouse.com provides in-depth information about surge protection, the two main types of surges, the best defense and more.

The two main power surges you need to be aware of to protect your home appliances and electronics are lightning strikes and downed power lines. Lightning induced surges are the most fearful and powerful. Fortunately these are not the most common type of surge.

The best defense to protect your home is a whole-home surge protector. These are typically hard-wired to the service panel by your local Dallas/Fort Worth electrician. You can also take additional steps to protect your home by installing “plug-in” surge protectors to help your major appliances, electronics, computers, etc.

All of us own home appliances, electronics, computers and similar items that we want to keep protected to prolong their lives. As posted earlier, whole-home surge protectors are the best way to do this.

The image posted here was taken by one of our electricians, and is hosted on our Flickr site. As you can see, the lightning strike caused significant damage. Hopefully our customer had a whole-home surge protector installed to eliminate further damage to their belongings.

Major appliances and home electronics are at a constant risk from every day power surges, as well as lightning. In order to prolong the life of these products, a whole-home surge protector is needed.

According to IndyStar.com, it is very important to keep your home protected with a whole-house surge protector, and we completely agree. Whole-house surge protection is designed to prevent any voltage from coming inside your home.

Please read more information on whole-house surge protection and why it is important by clicking on the article title above.

If you have any major appliances or expensive electronics, you are going to want to protect those units and do your best to prolong their life.

One obvious menace is power surges by lightning strikes. Most people assume that they are only in danger if lightning strikes their home. But truth is, lightning can damage your electronics and appliances from up to one mile away.

Another crucial affect that homeowners are not aware of is their home receives hundreds of harmful surges every day. Even without the presence of lightning strikes. These surges come from the power grid.

Protect your home today with a whole home surge protector. Only these protect your entire home.

This month we have shared several blog posts regarding the importance of never bending or breaking an electrical ground. If you bend or break an electrical ground, the result can be electrical shock.

In order to help you understand the electrical ground of a plug, we would like to share an image of a common electrical plug in the U.S. All three prongs must be in proper working condition to avoid the risk of electrical shock.

A Factsheet on Home Electrical Fire Prevention

A Factsheet on Home Electrical Fire Prevention:
Recently Milestone Electric posted an important safety message ‘Home Safety Tip No. 106.’ Here is more on that topic.

We would like to share an important message about the safety of electrical cords and how it relates to home electrical fire prevention. The United States Fire Administration (USFA) estimates home electrical problems account for over 28,000 fires a year. The majority of these fires are caused by wiring or a plug. It is very important to never bend or break the ground on an electrical plug.

ABC News recently shared an important story about how this holiday season is the most dangerous time of the year for house fires. From December 23 through New Year’s, the chances of a fire are much higher.

The only lifesaver in a fire is awareness. Everyone needs to have a properly working smoke detector. If your smoke detectors are not working in your home, give Milestone Electric a call.
The National Safety Council reports that about 1,000 people are electrocuted each year in the U.S. Removing, bending or breaking the ground off a plug is potentially fatal.

Most people are not aware of the dangers associated with this. These are required on all non-double insulated appliances. Without this ground present, if you come into contact with an electrical current you become the ground. The result is electrical shock.

Remember, never to break or bend these grounds. It compromises the integrity of the device and possibly voids the warranty. You may someday suffer electrocution from the device.

House Fire Caused by Overloaded Extension Cord

House Fire Caused by Overloaded Extension Cord:
Milestone Electric would like to share an important message about the dangers of overloaded extension cords.

This fire was started by an overloaded extension cord on the outside of the home. The fire spread from the outside cord to the inside of the home. Not only did this home have an overloaded extension cord, the home also had smoke detectors that did not function correctly. Thankfully nobody was hurt in the fire.

This image illustrates the importance of not overloading your extension cords. If you have an overloaded extension cord in your home or a smoke detector that does not work properly, give Milestone Electric a call.
